The Challenge

Decades ago, Mao Zedong declared that “Women hold up half the sky,” acknowledging that women are essential to China’s success. Yet even today, China’s female artists are severely underrepresented. To bring international attention to this problem, Half the Sky showcases art from 22 of China’s most talented female artists working today.

Something is Missing

Design focused on conveying the sense that something is missing from making Mao’s statement ring true. The logo hid the Chinese character for “woman.” The invitation includes an unconventional double fold and a hidden response card. The exhibition’s posters split a single piece of art, allowing them to form a relationship and convey a sense of longing or rejection.
